Pet Portrait to Fine Art

A big thank you goes out to one of my clients for introducing me to Sam Charles Hodgson, a fine art painter in the UK. He painted this picture of Luca from a photograph that Ashleigh Miller (an amazing photographer for us) took this winter.

This was the photo that Ashleigh took of Luca in his home in Denver, Colorado. The image was promptly e-mailed to Sam Charles in the UK to create this masterpiece. Isn’t it fabulous?

Sam Charles Hodgson – Cotswolds born and bred, Sam Charles Hodgson has grown up, and continues to live in the 5 Valleys of Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom. Early days were spent at Oxford Brookes University doing an Exercise and Health degree. This was followed by a spell in and around London working as a Film Camera Technician. However, the artwork only really started to develop after a period of immobility due to a series of sport induced back surgeries.

With no formal art school degree, intuition has played a large part in developing a unique, deconstructed, fluid style. Oil paints are employed due to their
strong pigmentation and the bold nature of large canvasses has been utilised to create pieces of artwork that have a creative flow which simplifies yet amplifies the texture, shape and personality of an animal.

Many canvasses later, a layering process where 4 distinct stages are employed to construct each artwork was formulated. Anatomically correct sketching forms the basis, followed by a wash to seal the canvas. Block colours fill and give depth to the painting in the third stage which is followed by a flowing, stylistic and hard edged brush technique,
evident in every piece.

Having grown up with greyhounds and lurchers, the subject matter for some paintings were always to hand for life drawing and reference. A passion for wild animals has lead to journeys further afield to study them in their own environment. Shows in both the UK and the USA have been well received with New York and Orlando appearances being coupled with a presence at the 2009 Oscars and Grammy award ceremonies. This exposure has lead to being in demand with Hollywood residents. Closer to home, work has been on display in Harrods and numerous publications have featured his work, most notably the Cotswold Life June 2010 article.
